How
to Become an Approved Driving Instructor - ADI
The Practical Driving (Part 2) Course
This part of the course, at the stated cost,
is over 2 days usually combining theory and practical driving, mock tests, handouts
and a final briefing about practices to be undertaken. Any further training will be kept to a minimum but at an extras cost.
Each day is for 6 hours: 9.00 a.m. to 12.00
noon and from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00p.m.
A
follow up half a day mock test is recommended prior to you booking your test. (Extra
cost.)
Again, we plan Part 2 courses well in advance and aim to accommodate your
preferred days of the week (Monday to Saturday inclusive)
As
previously detailed, trainees will be taken for this part of the course by an
instructor who has been carefully selected, trained, briefed and contracted to
undertake your Part 2 training. We aim for you to have the same in-car trainer
throughout.
At
times there will be whole group, theoretical training sessions in the centre,
specifically covering difficulties experienced. Videos may be used to assist in
this training.
This aspect of the course incorporates driving to the standard described within
the DSA’s Driving Manual. This is not a slightly more difficult “L” test. A
drive of an advanced nature is required, showing a thorough knowledge of the
principles of good driving and road safety, driving with skill and confidence.
Even though you may have been driving for many years, bad habits develop. Not
only does this need to be eliminated or modified, but also new driving
techniques may need to be developed until you drive to a consistently high
standard as the norm. The standard required is higher than that of some advanced
driving organisations!
Some of the areas of
driving that usually need attention are:
-
Attitude to other drivers
-
Steering technique
-
Gear changing
-
Using all mirrors effectively
-
Planning to make effective use of the
accelerator and brakes
-
Planning to avoid adding to the hazards
ahead
-
Emerging from junctions
After an initial base-line assessment / test drive followed by a private
discussion about your driving technique, we will take you through all aspects of
driving, to improve your skills etc. You will receive handouts about these
during the course.
At
the conclusion of the Part 2 training days, you will be given a driving
assessment / test with a different instructor trainer. You will then receive a
verbal de-brief about your hour-long drive through urban, rural and dual
carriageways / motorways, that will incorporate all aspects of driving ability
including all manoeuvres. A written report of your mock test and recommended
further practice will be provided.
It
will then be for you to practice until you believe you are at the required
standard to take the Part 2 test. Should you wish to receive another mock test
prior to your test date, then this can be arranged at a mutually convenient time
from the centre, but at an additional cost.
