How
to Become an Approved Driving Instructor - ADI
The Practical Instruction
(Part 3) Course
This is the test many people find the most difficult. The Part 3 course is the
lengthiest and incorporates the now mandatory 40 hours basic training to enable
a trainee to have a Trainee Licence from the DSA. Each learning topic is covered
thoroughly – theoretically and practically.
The course is over 5 days, Monday – Friday inclusive, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
– 5 p.m. with “homework” given to do most evenings! Additional time
at an additional cost is available, on the morning of the sixth day, for those who require
such and who can stay for another night. Each trainee should plan for this –
just in case, and to save travelling for further training at another time.
It is recommended that you bring to this part of
the course a small, hand-held tape recorder (micro cassette recorder) and plenty
of tapes. You may record each lesson briefing that your instructor trainer
delivers to you. Playing each briefing back to yourself will help you to prepare
and deliver a briefing to either your trainer or to a trainee
colleague. You should also record your own briefings and fault-finding sessions!
Please do not record briefings given by other
trainees.
During this Part 3 course, you
shall:
-
Observe lesson topics being given by an instructor
“live” to a real client, as can be arranged. This will occur at various times
throughout the course.
-
Have your trainer deliver each lesson briefing
to you as if you were the non-driver client.
-
Return the briefing to your trainer or trainee
colleague, as if he was your client, the following day.
-
Observe your trainee colleague giving
instruction.
-
Continue such practices until your trainer is
satisfied with the standard you have reached.
-
Receive a set of full Graphic Briefings (see
link on left) which are to be purchased.
-
Receive a set of lesson briefing notes
(amended for your Part 3 test)
At
the end of each lesson, that you present to either your trainee colleague or to
you trainer, you will receive a verbal de-briefing. At the end of each topic
practiced, you will receive a written report, showing your strengths and
weaknesses. This will help you to realise any further practices necessary before
taking your Part 3 test.
Those
who wish to enquire further should do so via this website. We can send you a
comprehensive brochure that covers every aspect of ADI training and may well
answer all your questions. (Click on the 'Back' button to find contact details.)
Alternatively, you may opt to
attend a Taster Day.
We invite you to visit us
(from 10.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.) to find out whether you are suited to this
profession. We usually have a Taster Day during the first week of each month but
will aim to arrange one to suit your availability.
During the day you will:
-
accompany an instructor
giving a lesson to a learner driver
-
have the opportunity to
understand the type of questions that are asked on Part 1 mock test theory
questions
-
be asked to give a short
commentary whilst driving
-
undertake one or two,
short and simple instructional tasks to establish your ability to give logical
and sequential instructions to another person
-
have an informal
interview with an ADI trainer
The day is designed to provide 2-way
assessment to help establish whether you would make a good driving instructor.
Trainers will provide you with honest answers to any question asked and you will
find them most helpful.
